Article:

On Germany's Ascension Day, the risk of alcohol-related traffic accidents significantly spikes, according to official statistics. Last year, for instance, the number of such incidents on this holiday stood at 340, identical to the count for no other day in the year. This trend is expected to repeat itself this Thursday.

Typically, Germany experiences roughly 95 alcohol-related traffic accidents daily. However, on Ascension Day, the clusters of incidents become apparent, with weekends and holidays showing a marked increase in the calendar view of German accident statistics. In 2023, the Federal Statistical Office reported a total of around 34,700 alcohol-related accidents, representing an 8% increase compared to the previous year. On Ascension Day 2023 alone, 204 of the 340 incidents resulted in injuries, and one person lost their life.

This pattern can be attributed to several factors. Ascension Day, which marks the 39th day following Easter, is traditionally celebrated nationwide with specific regional customs. Men's groups often gather outdoors for sociability and drinks during the day, which might lead to impairment when driving. Hiking trails and tourist spots are usually busy, driven by the holiday, often sunny weather, and a break from work.

Traffic safety expert Fani Zaneta of TÜV Association expressed concerns about the underestimation of alcohol risks in road traffic. She pointed out that the combination of positive spirits, alcohol consumption, and self-underestimation in road traffic can be potentially explosive. Other days with consistently high rates of alcohol-related accidents include New Year's Day and May Day.

Weather conditions can also contribute to the risks during Ascension Day. Last year, for instance, the weather was generally dry and sunny, particularly in western Germany. However, the role of weather is not always decisive; in 2021, the weather was not the dominant factor due to COVID-19 restrictions that saw reduced travelers in the country.

This year's Ascension Day weather forecast reported cloudy conditions in the northwest with some rain in the afternoon, but friendlier and often dry conditions elsewhere, with the sun most visible towards the Baltic Sea.

While road accidents are a primary concern during Ascension Day, water accidents should also be considered. The number of fatal drowning incidents in German waters increased to 411 last year, with men involved in about 75% of the cases. The impulsive jump into water bodies, such as gravel pits, rivers, or swimming pools, can quickly put both sober and drunk revelers in acute danger.
