A French court has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to retired surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec for the sexual abuse and rape of 299 patients, most of whom were minors, in hospitals in western France from 1989 to 2014.
Le Scouarnec admitted to abusing or raping 299 patients, including 256 under the age of 15, with charges including 111 rapes and 189 sexual assaults. Many assaults occurred while patients were unconscious or under anesthesia.
The 20-year sentence is the heaviest possible under French law for sex crimes. Two-thirds of the sentence must be served before parole eligibility, meaning Le Scouarnec cannot request parole until serving at least about 13 years of the current term. Le Scouarnec, who was already serving a 15-year prison sentence from 2020 for abusing four minors, two of whom were his nieces, has been in custody since 2017.
