Authorities Seek Psychiatric Care for Woman Brandishing Knives

Following the knife attack at Hamburg Central Station, relief is being felt as four critically injured individuals are now in a stable condition. The suspect, a 39-year-old woman from Lower Saxony, will be provisionally detained in a psychiatric facility, according to Hamburg authorities.

Reports suggest that the woman, identified as Lydia S., has a documented history of mental illness and prior interactions with law enforcement. No political or extremist motive has been found, the police stated.

On Friday evening, the woman allegedly stabbed 18 people at the busy train station, leaving several with life-threatening injuries. Four of the victims, three women and a man, are now in stable condition.

According to police, Lydia S. initially handled the knife on the south platform after entering the station. She then began attacking people waiting for trains on platform 13/14. The attack was swiftly interrupted by the quick actions of bystanders and a patrol when the woman was immediately arrested. There is no evidence that she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Investigations have shown strong indications of mental distress on Lydia S.'s part at the time of the attack. Lydia S. has a prior criminal record, including a charge for carrying an undeclared blunt weapon. She was recently released from a closed psychiatric ward in Geeshamcht just one day before the attack and is believed to be homeless.

Hamburg Central Station is one of Germany's busiest transport hubs, with over 500,000 travelers daily, especially during rush hour and school holidays. The incident on Friday evening triggered a massive response from rescue services, firefighters, police, and the German Red Cross, which provided intervention and care to the injured, witnesses, and relatives.
