"Birth of a Wondrous Infant": 265-gram newborn welcomed in Passau

Passau's Third Order Hospital Witnesses Remarkable Delivery of Bavaria's Smallest Surviving Premature Baby

A small miracle has taken place at Passau's Third Order Hospital as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) welcomed a bottle-feed baby girl weighing an unprecedented 265 grams at birth. Medical Director and Chief Physician, Matthias Keller, confirmed the news to the Bavarian Press Group.

International registry data positions this premature baby, born in February, as the 14th smallest surviving newborn overall, with the 6th smallest birth recorded for female preemies. According to Keller, despite the hospital's global expertise in newborn and premature baby care, this birth weight is extraordinary for even the most experienced medical and nursing staff.

"This baby's accomplishment is nothing short of a miracle—despite her initial low birth weight, she is thriving and has already quadrupled her weight," said Keller, "Reaching this low birth weight is the very precipice of what is medically and clinically possible."

Common essential materials, like those for blood tests or respiratory support, are incompatible with such a tiny size. Keller emphasized that a minor change, such as a single drop of water in the respiratory tubes, can pose life-threatening complications. Consequently, the baby required constant care in three shifts for several months to ensure her well-being.

While the Passau baby's survival aligns with some of the smallest documented premature babies worldwide, it does not shatter the absolute record for the smallest surviving premature baby. The global record for the world's smallest premature baby survivor stands at 245 grams, according to the Guinness World Record [3]. Another survivor, Curtis Zy-Keith Means, weighed only 420 grams at birth and overcame a less than 1% survival rate to thrive [2].

Compared to these tiny survivors, the baby born at Passau's Third Order Hospital weighed 405 grams at birth and was born at 28 weeks gestation [1]. This baby's case stands as an extraordinary example of resilience and survival, but it does not surpass the absolute record for the smallest surviving premature baby. The NICU team at Passau's Third Order Hospital faces these challenges head-on, striving to provide the best possible care to their small but strong patients.

  1. In the realm of science and medical-conditions, Passau's Third Order Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is renowned for its expertise in caring for newborn and chronic diseases like premature babies.
  2. Despite the hospital's global reputation, the delivery of a baby girl weighing 265 grams at birth, a case handled by the NICU, is considered extraordinary, even for the most experienced medical and nursing staff in health-and-wellness and fitness-and-exercise fields.
  3. This survivor's miraculous journey is a testament to the resilience of life, highlighting the importance of mental-health support and optimal nutrition during these critical stages of life.
  4. While this baby's survival story is astounding and places her among the smallest surviving premature babies globally, she doesn't hold the absolute record for the world's smallest premature baby survivor, which stands at 245 grams, according to the Guinness World Record.
