Boil Water Advisory Issued for Greifswald After Enterococci Contamination

A boiling order for drinking water has been issued for the entire city area of Greifswald, excluding the island of Riems. This comes after microbial contamination with enterococci was discovered at the Groß Schönwalde waterworks during a routine inspection.

The contamination was found to cause slight exceedances of limit values at one sampling point. However, no other health risks are currently expected. The cause of the contamination remains unknown, and there is no connection to the current EHEC incident. Extensive samples were taken today, Monday (08.09.2025), to investigate the issue further. The boiling order is a precautionary measure to prevent potential gastrointestinal irritation from the contaminated water.

The county health department is working closely with Stadtwerke Greifswald to address the problem. Stadtwerke Greifswald is responsible for providing information to citizens about the contamination. The responsible authority for investigating microbial contamination sources at the Groß Schönwalde waterworks is typically the local or regional water management and health authorities.

A boiling order for drinking water is in effect for Greifswald residents, excluding Riems island. While the cause of the contamination is still unknown, no additional health risks are expected. Further investigations are underway, and the public will be updated as more information becomes available.
