In the heart of Germany, the city of Bremen joined the nationwide "Stadtradeln" initiative this year, a programme of the European network Climate Alliance, aimed at promoting cycling as a means of sustainable transportation. The campaign, which was integrated with the tourist theme year 'FAHRRADja! 2024' and the city's cycling initiative Bike It!, saw an enthusiastic response from Bremen residents.

During the 2023 Bremen Stadtradeln campaign, three teams – ADFC Bremen, GSOnBike, and ArianeGroup – covered a combined total of 20,936 kilometers. The ADFC Bremen team, in particular, made a remarkable effort, covering the most kilometers with 20,936 kilometers.

Bremen's participation in the initiative was not limited to these teams, however. The entire city covered a total of 662,156 kilometers during the campaign. This impressive figure is a testament to the commitment of Bremen residents to sustainable living.

The city of Essen also participated in the initiative, covering a total of 910,000 kilometers. Comparison cities, which have been participating in the initiative for several years, include Hannover, which covered approximately 1,850,000 kilometers during their Stadtradeln campaign.

While data regarding Bremen’s performance relative to similar-sized cities over multiple years is not readily available, it is evident that Bremen made a strong debut in the Stadtradeln campaign. The city of Leipzig, for instance, covered a proud 3,384,000 kilometers during their Stadtradeln campaign, a significant figure that underscores the potential for growth in Bremen's cycling culture.

The efforts of Bremen residents did not go unnoticed. Senator Ünsal thanked all Bremen residents for their enthusiastic participation in the first "Stadtradeln". The total CO2 savings achieved by exchanging motor vehicles for bicycles during the campaign amounted to 110 tons, further emphasising the environmental impact of the initiative.

Looking ahead, the Bremen Stadtradeln coordinators have expressed their intention to participate in the campaign again in 2025. For more information about the Free Hanseatic City and Stadtradeln, visit www.stadtradeln.de/bremen.
