Cancer Survivor Becomes Benevolent Contributor: Exploring the Generosity of a Healed Patient Towards a Hospital that Offered Them Solace

Gwyn Hankinson, a dedicated volunteer and long-time supporter of the Wilmot Cancer Institute, shared her inspiring story of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

In 2002, Gwyn, who was 33 years old and two months pregnant, received the shocking news that she had invasive breast cancer. A routine prenatal visit had revealed a small lump in her breast, leading to a biopsy that confirmed her worst fears.

However, Gwyn learned that she could receive treatment while pregnant and that she and her unborn child had a positive prognosis. This discovery was a beacon of hope in a challenging time.

Gwyn's son, Owen, was born seven weeks early during the treatment. The Wilmot Cancer Institute Comprehensive Breast Center provided Gwyn with the care and support she needed throughout her journey.

Gwyn and her husband, Garth Hankinson, express their deep gratitude for the care they received at Wilmot. They encourage others to consider it as a vital resource in their fight against cancer.

The Hankinsons have been involved with the Wilmot Cancer Institute for many years. Their support began in 2003 with a $100 donation, and in 2022, they made a major philanthropic commitment of $250,000 to Wilmot. Their donation supports Wilmot's Discovery Fund, which advances research, provides world-class oncology care, expands clinical trials, and trains future clinicians and scientists.

Gwyn volunteers at the information desk at Wilmot's primary location for the past seven years, while Garth joined Wilmot's advisory board in 2021. As the chief financial officer at Constellation Brands, Garth contributes ideas and knowledge from his professional career to the advisory board.

The Hankinsons also attend and support Wilmot's Discovery Ball, the cancer center's largest annual fundraiser. In a touching gesture, family members held a fundraising dinner for breast cancer research at Wilmot, raising $3,000.

Gwyn advocates that cancer guidance should be based on personal research and decisions. She urges everyone to be proactive in their health and to seek out the best possible care. Her story serves as a testament to the power of determination, hope, and the support of a compassionate community.
