Co-worker's Darth Vader comparison leads to NHS staff member receiving a £30,000 settlement

In a bizarre turn of events, an NHS worker has scored a £30,000 payout after she was frankly offended by being compared to the infamous Star Wars antagonist, Darth Vader.

Blood donation worker Lorna Rooke felt increasingly "unpopular" among her colleagues following a Star Wars-themed personality quiz orchestrated by her colleague, Amanda Harber. Despite taking the call during the test, Mrs. Rooke was disappointed when Harber revealed she'd been categorized as Darth Vader material.

In the popular movie franchise, Vader is a half-human, half-robot who uses the 'Dark Side' of 'the Force' to pursue Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance. This unfortunate comparison left Mrs. Rooke feeling disheartened.

Explaining her ordeal at the tribunal in Croydon, south London, Mrs. Rooke stated, "Being compared to him made me feel 'unpopular,' and it was one of the reasons for my resignation the following month."

While Employment Judge Kathryn Ramsden acknowledged Darth Vader's positive attributes, she concluded that being equated with the dark Jedi is an undeniably detrimental workplace experience. "Darth Vader is a legendary villain of the Star Wars series, and being aligned with his personality is insulting," the judge stated.

Despite her claim that the Darth Vader incident prompted her to leave her job, the tribunal found that Mrs. Rooke's departure was primarily motivated by her personal circumstances, including caring for her mother with Alzheimer's disease. However, it did establish that equating her with Darth Vader was indeed a workplace detriment and poor treatment following a protected disclosure she'd made earlier.

Moving past the "Darth Vader incident," the tribunal rejected Mrs. Rooke's claims for unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and failure to make reasonable adjustments. She received a compensation of £28,989.61.

Fun Fact:
