Compared hiking with Garmin Instinct 3, Whoop MG, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and AllTrails simultaneously - check out the contrast in performance and features.

In an effort to test the new Peak subscription service on AllTrails, a prominent fitness app, I embarked on a 7.81 Kim hike through the picturesque Wye Valley in the United Kingdom. With a trio of wearables strapped to my wrist – the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Garmin Instinct 3, and the Whoop MG – I aimed to evaluate the performance of these devices during outdoor activities, with a specific focus on GPS and heart rate accuracy.

The Garmin Instinct 3, priced affordably among the Garmin range, boasts exceptional GPS capabilities for outdoor enthusiasts, even on a budget. Its multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology ensures superior positioning accuracy, especially during challenging conditions like signal blockage.

I often use the Apple Watch Ultra 2 as a benchmark when comparing the GPS and heart rate indications of other, less expensive wearables. During my test last year, I ran the London Marathon while wearing the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Garmin Epix Pro, finding just minor discrepancies in accuracy between the two.

For this hike, I compared the Garmin Instinct 3's readings against those from the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and AllTrails' map of the route, resulting in a 0.13-kilometer differential between Garmin, AllTrails, and Apple. With satellite connections from three different networks over the course of the 8-kilometer hike, these variations were remarkably small, demonstrating the reliability of both devices when it comes to GPS accuracy.

As for heart rate readings, I decided to let the Whoop MG's algorithms automatically detect the hike, comparing it with the readings from my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Garmin Instinct 3. All three devices displayed similar heart rates, with no significant deviations or spikes, despite being worn on different wrists and using various algorithms.

While further testing would be required to compare the Whoop MG against other top-tier heart rate monitors, I am generally satisfied with the accuracy of all three devices tested on this hike. This experiment also revealed that AllTrails may offer a slight overestimation of distances, particularly when traversing wooded paths where GPS signals can be affected due to coverage.

In conclusion, the Garmin Instinct 3 showcases impressive GPS accuracy and outdoor-focused features, making it an excellent choice for hiking and backpacking. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Whoop MG each bring unique benefits, offering user-friendly interfaces and recovery data, respectively. Nonetheless, all three devices performed admirably throughout the hike in terms of GPS and heart rate accuracy.

Stay tuned for a comprehensive review of the Whoop MG, focusing on its accuracy in a more rigorous testing environment. In the meantime, consider exploring these devices further if you're seeking reliable partners for your outdoor adventures.
