Contaminated Drinking Wells in Moers: Excessive Bacterial Presence in Water Causes Blockage

In the town of Moers, a popular drinking fountain located in the city center on Steinstraße has temporarily ceased operation, following concerns about contamination. The city council, in a proactive measure to safeguard public health, has initiated tests on the water quality and plans to carry out necessary maintenance or upgrades to meet the required health and safety standards.

According to Herbert Hornung, the Enni Group spokesperson, the fountain was first opened after an initial analysis but faced issues during the next routine check. Dr. Ulrich Borchers, a director of the Enni Group's water quality department, has provided additional information on the matter.

Bacteria, as Dr. Borchers explained, often find their way into drinking fountains through hand contact or settling in valves and seals. He stated that increased colony counts in drinking fountains are not uncommon. The Institute for Water Research was involved in testing the water from the new drinking fountain, and according to them, the shutdown was likely a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, another drinking water fountain in Moers' skate park is currently out of order due to a missing control element. The control element for the skate park fountain will be installed during the winter break. The new drinking fountain was installed by the Enni Group, and Andreas Bongartz of Enni announced an upgrade of the technology for the fountain.

It's important to note that while there was no immediate health risk, the drinking water regulations' thresholds were exceeded. However, the city assures the public that they are working diligently to address the issue and restore the fountain to safe and clean conditions.

For more specific information regarding the cause or the resolution timeline for the Moers fountain, local city communications or official Moers municipal sources would be the most reliable references. The city council encourages the public to stay informed and follow updates on the situation.

The city council is considering implementing stricter economic and social policies to ensure the maintenance and upgrades of public facilities, such as drinking fountains, meet health and safety standards, following the contamination issue at the fountain on Steinstraße. In the meantime, improvements in health-and-wellness and environmental-science technologies, like those announced by Andreas Bongartz, could potentially prevent such incidents in the future.
