COVID-19 Outbreak: One out of Five Risks Infection

Sechenov University, led by Academician Petr Glybochko, is participating in an international study investigating the long-term effects of COVID-19. The study, organized by the International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC), aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the lasting impacts of the virus.

The press service of Sechenov University announced the university's involvement in the study the previous day. The study involves surveying patients who were hospitalized in the hospitals of Sechenov University as part of the Russian part of the study.

According to Petr Glybochko, predictable consequences of recovering from COVID-19 include fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and shortness of breath. Among the unexpected consequences, he noted, is hair loss, which occurs in 20% of people recovering from the virus.

It was not earlier reported that loss of smell and taste is a common symptom in COVID-19 patients. However, recent reports suggest that loss of smell and taste occurs in 50-70% of COVID-19 patients, and in most cases, these symptoms return to normal.

The study is being conducted internationally, but the search results do not provide information about who leads the Russian part of the study organized by ISARIC. Almaty.tv reported this information with reference to TASS.

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic, studies like this one are crucial in understanding the long-term effects of COVID-19 and in developing strategies for effective treatment and management of the virus.
