Daily Recap: Fatal Police Shooting in Avondale, Mootilda's Residential Shift, Weather Predictions
In the Valley, the week has been a mix of heartwarming stories and unfortunate incidents.
A cow named Mootilda made headlines after she managed to escape from a local slaughterhouse and was rescued by Aimee's Farm Animal Sanctuary. Animal lovers stampeded to raise the necessary funds to save Mootilda, with Aimee Takaha, the founder and owner of the sanctuary, successfully collecting $2,500 in just 24 hours to prevent Mootilda from being returned to the slaughterhouse.
Unfortunately, there were other tragic events in the Valley. A Valley father and husband lost his life in Tempe after a driver, suspected of being impaired, ran a red light. Three people, including 38-year-old Kevin Roe, were involved in a crash that occurred just after midnight on September 7 near Rural Road and University Drive. Mr. Roe did not survive his injuries.
In another incident, a man was shot by Avondale police officers near 125th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. The man, who was reported to have a gun and threatened officers, was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The weather in the Valley has also been a topic of conversation. Overnight storms led to a hazy start to Wednesday, with partly cloudy skies expected today. There is a slight chance for a stray monsoon storm today. Highs in the 100s are anticipated.
On a different note, the Division of Developmental Disabilities is implementing changes to attendant care and habilitation services for children younger than 18. Under the changes, the state will no longer assess the needs of children younger than 10 with disabilities for attendant care. Families will now have to cover the costs of attendant care and habilitation services. There are new, age-based limits on these services as well.
As always, we encourage our readers to stay safe, stay informed, and continue to support each other in these challenging times.
