Dangerous bacteria found in selected DermaRite soaps, lotions, and cleansers prompts company recall
In a recent announcement, DermaRite Industries has voluntarily recalled several of its products due to contamination with the Burkholderia cepacia bacteria. The affected products include DermaKleen, KleenFoam, DermaSarra, and PeriGiene, distributed across the United States and Puerto Rico.
DermaKleen, an OTC Healthcare antiseptic lotion soap with Vitamin E, is available in 1000ml and 800ml bag-n-box, 10/case and 12/case respectively. KleenFoam, an OTC Antimicrobial foam soap indicated for handwashing, is available in 1000ml and 12/case. DermaSarra, an OTC External analgesic used for temporary relief of itching associated with minor skin irritations, is available in 7.5oz and in packages of 24 per case. PeriGiene, an OTC Antiseptic cleanser indicated for use in the perineal area, is available in 7.5oz and in packages of 48 per case.
These products, with expiration dates ranging from July 2025 to February 2027, have been recalled due to the potential risk of serious and life-threatening infections. Specific lot numbers and reorder numbers for the affected products can be found on the FDA website's recall posting from August 8, 2025.
Customers and distributors are instructed to destroy the recalled items and contact DermaRite at (973) 569-9000 ext. 104 or email [email protected] for more information. So far, the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall.
It's important to note that use of the recalled products by immunocompromised individuals or those attending to them could lead to infections more likely to spread into the blood stream, leading to life-threatening sepsis. Consumers with issues related to the recalled products should contact their physician or healthcare provider.
For those who have used the recalled products and are experiencing adverse reactions or quality problems, the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program is available.
DermaRite Industries has notified its distributors and customers via email, asking them to check their products and to destroy any items mentioned in the recall. The company urges everyone to exercise caution and follow the guidelines provided by the FDA and DermaRite Industries.
Due to the recall of certain DermaRite Industries products due to contamination, it's advisable for consumers to avoid using health-and-wellness products like DermaKleen, KleenFoam, DermaSarra, and PeriGiene for skin care, especially if they have medical-conditions that weaken their immune system.
