Apparently, employers who don't comply with this obligation have to shell out an equalization levy to the integration offices, the amount of which is determined by the size of your business and the height of your employment quota. It's all about creating a financial balance for those who are doing their part by employing people with disabilities.

So, in 2023, an astounding 19,400 people with disabilities were employed in the social security system in the state. A stunning 80% of them are aged 45 or older, and most are working in the manufacturing industry, public administration, or the social and health sector.

Now, let's zero in on why this is happening. The employment rate of people with disabilities in Saxony-Anhalt is low because of the broader economic and social challenges in the region. With a relatively high poverty rate (approximately 22.3%), the area has seen its fair share of economic hardships, which can significantly impact vulnerable groups like people with disabilities.

Moreover, Saxony-Anhalt's economy ranks relatively low in terms of gross regional product (GRP), contributing only about 2.0% to Germany's GDP. This reflects less economic activity and possibly fewer job opportunities overall.
