Dramatic surge of cases reported within Palestinian refugee settlements by a 40-fold increase
==============================================================================
The Gaza Strip, a region previously less susceptible to the spread of COVID-19, has recently reported its first cases. This development is particularly concerning due to several compounding humanitarian crises in the region.
The number of COVID-19 infections in Palestinian refugee camps has surged over 40 times in just two months, from 200 cases in July to 9,000 today. This alarming increase has been highlighted by Philippe Lazzarini, the new head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Gaza faces extreme overcrowding, severe food insecurity, and a crippling blockade that restricts movement and access to medical supplies. These conditions exacerbate the spread and impact of COVID-19. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is approaching critical levels of hunger and imminent famine in parts, severely undermining the population’s ability to cope with additional health stresses like the pandemic.
Key factors making Gaza especially vulnerable include overcrowded refugee camps with limited capacity for social distancing, critical food shortages and malnutrition, restricted access to healthcare infrastructure and medical supplies, and a history of sieges and conflicts damaging infrastructure.
The situation is a complex emergency where pandemic management is hindered by pre-existing humanitarian crises and political restrictions. In comparison, Palestinian refugee camps in neighboring countries like Lebanon and Jordan have also reported COVID-19 cases but typically operate under different conditions of access and infrastructure.
The lack of disinfectants and protective equipment for medical personnel in UNRWA further compounds the situation. Lazzarini has expressed concern about the potential spread of the virus in Gaza, as it is densely populated and difficult to medically supply.
In response, UNRWA is seeking help from the international community to address the challenges posed by the spread of COVID-19. The agency urgently needs more help to improve healthcare, education, and food supply for Palestinian refugees in the Israeli-occupied territories and neighboring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

Other science, such as epidemiology and public health, is crucial in understanding and addressing the rapid spread of COVID-19 in health-and-wellness-challenged regions like the Gaza Strip. The urgent need for support from the international community in providing vital resources like medical supplies and disinfectants cannot be overstated.
