EIOH's doctor, Jin Xiao, selected for ADA's Council on Scientific Matters
Dr. Jin Xiao, a renowned expert in the field of oral health, has been appointed to the American Dental Association's (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs. The Council, composed of approximately 20 U.S. oral health researchers and clinicians, plays a crucial role in developing policies that sustain the science basis of the dental profession.
Dr. Xiao, who holds a DDS and a PhD in oral microbiology, is a leader in the investigation and advancement of oral health during the perinatal period. As Founding Director and Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Eastman Institute for Oral Health, he is instrumental in training the next generation of dental professionals and promoting evidence-based clinical practices.
His research focuses on understanding the causes and prevention of dental caries, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and young children. Notably, he has been involved in studies showing that a zinc solution can effectively reduce tooth staining associated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) treatment, a clinically significant advancement for preventive pediatric dentistry.
In addition to his research, Dr. Xiao is a mentor to PhD students and is using AI and other technologies to help with early detection and improve access to dental treatment for underserved populations. His appointment to the Council on Scientific Affairs underscores his authority and impact in scientific dental policy and practice.
Members of the Council are expected to apply scientific principles to assist with implementing many of its programs, such as standards development, professional and over-the-counter product evaluations, and the ADA Research Agenda. Objective analysis and review of information from all areas of science is a critical requirement for members of the Council on Scientific Affairs.
Dr. Xiao's expertise includes cariology research, clinical and translational research in maternal and infant oral health, oral microbiome, and mDentistry. The ADA is perfectly positioned to benefit from his insights and guidance, as it seeks out scientific leaders who have experience in scientific processes and research and are widely published.
The Council's work is meant to be meaningful to practicing dentists, and Dr. Xiao's appointment is a testament to the ADA's commitment to supporting research that directly impacts patient care. Dr. Xiao was nominated and selected by the ADA Board of Trustees for a four-year term, and he is perfectly positioned to provide valuable input and help guide and support the ADA.
