Eliminating Illicit Liquor Trade is the targeted objective by the Krasnodar Governor
In a bid to combat the sale of counterfeit alcohol and ensure public safety, authorities in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, have stepped up their efforts against illegal trading points. Over the past three months, more than 600 trade objects have been inspected, leading to the discovery of eight such points in just two days.
The latest crackdown, carried out in cooperation with the police, resulted in the seizure of nearly 44,000 liters of counterfeit alcohol products. However, only 4% of these products were found to be counterfeit during the inspections. The seized counterfeit products are currently being stored pending court decisions.
Sochi Mayor, Andrey Proshunin, and Roman Kurinnoy, the head of the regional department for consumer affairs and alcohol market regulation, are leading the charge against this illicit activity.
Despite these efforts, methanol poisoning incidents linked to illegally sold alcohol continue to pose serious health risks, especially in popular tourist regions like Krasnodar Krai. Authorities typically engage in crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales points, public health warnings, increased regulation, and emergency response protocols to manage such incidents.
However, the effectiveness of these efforts varies, with challenges remaining due to the underground nature of illegal alcohol sales. Local authorities in Krasnodar Krai have publicly acknowledged concerns about methanol poisonings and periodically announce crackdowns.
For tourists and locals, staying informed via official sources, avoiding suspicious alcohol sources, and seeking immediate medical help upon adverse symptoms are the best preventive measures. Since the beginning of the year, more than 360 cases of illegal alcohol trade have been prevented in Sochi.
