Following an evaluation of its magazine operations, the editorially autonomous publishing division of the nation's science agency – our publishing partner – has taken a challenging decision

Evolving Horizon for Our Digital Ecosystem

The national science agency's editorially independent publishing arm, our partner in magazine publishing, has announced that they will be discontinuing the production of our platform. The final print edition is scheduled for June 2025, and digital subscriptions will also end at that time. Subscribers will receive a refund for their remaining subscription term.

Cosmos online news service will continue to operate at our website, transitioning later in the year to our publishing partner's new digital destination for science content. This new platform will house peer-reviewed journals, e-books, and fact-based science news, with a goal of uniting audiences for a sustainable future.

A new news team will be hired to continue reporting on the latest science discoveries and interviews with scientists. Subscribers are encouraged to sign up for Cosmos newsletters to stay informed about these developments.

The decision to cease print production was not taken lightly and reflects the broader trend of audiences moving away from print magazines and increasing costs associated with their production.

We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the writers, staff, and readers who have supported Cosmos magazine over the years.

Subscription refunds will be handled according to the following steps:

  • If your subscription was purchased directly from our publishing partner with a credit card, the remaining balance will be credited to the card owner's account.
  • If your subscription was purchased through the Royal Institution of Australia prior to June 2024, please contact [email protected] or call 1300 788000 to arrange a refund.
  • If your subscription was purchased via an agent, a refund will be organized following their standard processes.
  • If you are a school or library and purchased via EFT or paid on invoice through your school account, we will contact you to arrange your refund.

This move signals a shift to digital content amidst evolving reader preferences and technological advancements in the dissemination of scientific information. The new platform is expected to improve accessibility and engagement with science content for a broader audience. Four new roles have been created to support the dynamic news service on the digital platform.

CSIRO Publishing remains committed to its presence in the science publishing landscape, adapting to the demands of a digital age.

As the national science agency's publishing arm transitions towards a digital future, a new platform will focus on health-and-wellness, medical-conditions, and science news, catering to an expanded audience. This shift in Cosmos magazine aims to enhance engagement and accessibility with science content, aligning with evolving reader preferences and the advancements in technology.

In this new digital era, a dedicated news team will continue to report on the latest science discoveries and interviews with scientists, emphasizing the importance of science in our society and its profound impact on our health-and-wellness and understanding of medical-conditions. Subscribers are encouraged to stay informed about these developments by signing up for Cosmos newsletters.
