In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Landshut recently hosted a training session aimed at preparing helpers to provide support and relief for caregivers of the elderly. The focus of the training was on psychological and geriatric psychiatric illnesses, with a particular emphasis on dementia.

The goal of the training was twofold: to prepare helpers for both volunteer and non-volunteer service provision, enabling them to support, accompany, and relieve caregivers. The session, held on June 4, 2025, at the district authority, was a collaborative effort between the local authorities and the Alzheimer Society of Nuremberg.

The training covered a wide range of topics, including interaction methods with neighbours or relatives with dementia, communication strategies for individuals with dementia, and the role of helpers in adopting an appropriate attitude without overstepping boundaries. Household management support was also explored, encompassing hygiene and cleaning, nutrition and meal preparation, and accident prevention.

Two-thirds of the training time was dedicated to 'Dealing with people in need of care and with dementia,' ensuring that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and best practices in this area. The training provided practical tips and implementation strategies for daily support services.

The training session was well-attended, with 19 participants from the county and city of Landshut in attendance. Elisabeth Strasser, the county's senior representative, expressed joy that the support network for elderly people in the county had become denser. She also expressed gratitude to the speaker, Renate Frischhut, and the participants.

Due to the high demand for such training, a repeat offer is planned for the coming year. For those interested in the next training for daily care services provision in Landshut, it is recommended to contact Klinikum Landshut or local care service providers directly for exact upcoming dates.

It is worth noting that even in care level I, where no 'classic' care is needed, daily support services are utilized. The care insurance funds provide a monthly relief allowance of 131 euros for these services.

Elisabeth Strasser expressed her satisfaction, stating, 'The training has been a great success, and we are pleased to see that the demand for such training is so high. We are committed to continuing our efforts to provide the best possible care for our elderly citizens.'

As the population ages, the need for such training will undoubtedly continue to grow. The success of the Landshut training serves as a model for other communities seeking to enhance their care for the elderly.
