The heat's on as the health minister demands a whopping billion-dollar injection from the federal government to stave off escalating health insurance contributions. She's sassy and straight to the point, "We're inconveniencing ourselves to pull together a package that averts or at least keeps annoying hikes at bay. Let's sync our heads with the entire government."

She ain't mincing words when she describes the health insurance funds' situation as a dramatic mess. The commission for sustainable financing, supposed to be in place pronto, isn’t cutting it. She expressed, "We can't wait until 2027 to jumpstart the commission's results. We need action now."

Additional tax dollars, in the billions, are on the table for health insurance funds as part of the package. The minister spilled the beans, "Job centers' contributions ain't enough to cover civilian beneficiaries' health costs. There's an imbalance here. We'll hash that out." According to health insurance fund calculations, the feds would dole out an extra 10 billion Euros to cover the costs of civilian beneficiaries.

The minister's not limited to health insurance. She's demanding a outstanding billion-dollar contribution from the federal government to prop up short-term financing for long-term care insurance. She said, "The federal government owes long-term care insurance around five billion Euros for pandemic-related expenses, like tests and the care protection shield, which saved many facilities from the chopping block. Long-term care insurance needs compensation for that." She hammered on the fact that this is a societal responsibility and no one should shy away from stepping up for short-term financing.

There are urgent matters plaguing long-term care insurance. She said, "We need to buy time to tackle the tough nut to crack reforms in long-term care insurance." The federal-state working group responsible for this will hit the ground running by the coalition, but progress will take time. "Meanwhile, short-term measures to stabilize long-term care finances are urgently needed," she said.

"We need to keep the coalition talking about this," she said, referring to the coalition agreement that doesn't earmark funds from the federal budget for long-term care insurance. "It's about finding a damn solution, a comprehensive package, not just a single demand," she reiterated. Experts fear a deficit of up to 5.8 billion euros in long-term care insurance this year.

Proposed during the coalition negotiations between the Union and the SPD were the 10 billion for health insurance of jobless citizens and settling Corona debts. However, both got scrapped in the final version.
