Flu Surge in Tulsa: 457 Hospitalizations, 12 Deaths - Get Vaccinated Now!

Influenza cases have surged in Tulsa County, with 457 hospitalizations and 12 deaths since September 2023. The Tulsa Health Department (THD), in collaboration with Hillcrest HealthCare System, is reminding residents to take preventive measures and get vaccinated as part of their annual 'Don't Bug Me' campaign.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue. THD advises frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, and vaccinations to prevent its spread. Children with flu-like symptoms should stay home until fever-free for 24 hours without medication. Since 2003, THD has joined Hillcrest HealthCare System annually to educate the community about healthy habits and prevent the spread of seasonal flu viruses and other communicable diseases, including COVID-19.

Statewide, there have been 1,642 influenza-associated hospitalizations and 42 deaths since September 2023. Influenza activity has reached peak levels in Tulsa County. Seasonal flu vaccines are recommended for everyone age six months and older and are widely available.

With influenza activity at its peak in Tulsa County, the Tulsa Health Department and Hillcrest HealthCare System urge residents to take preventive measures and get vaccinated. By doing so, we can protect ourselves, our families, and our community from the flu.
