Gathering Summary: Support Group, July 2025
Parkinson's NSW offers a variety of online support groups aimed at helping individuals living with Parkinson's disease manage their condition and live well. These groups cover a wide range of topics, from managing symptoms through medication and lifestyle changes, to understanding and improving intimacy and sexual health, maintaining mental and physical well-being, and coping with caregiver stress.
The meetings, held over Zoom, are recorded but shared only with those who register for the meetings. One such group, "Let's Talk Parkinson's", meets every two months and is facilitated by health and allied health professionals. The recorded sessions are added to the Living Well with Parkinson's library on YouTube.
For those who are considering or have undergone Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) or an advanced therapy like Apomorphine or Duadopa, quarterly meetings are held to provide specific guidance and support.
There is also a group called "Early/Young Onset" that caters to individuals living with Parkinson's who are under the age of 65 years. This group meets quarterly.
"Carers Chat", a support group exclusively for carers or spouses of someone living with Parkinson's, meets monthly. Unlike the other groups, these meetings are not recorded and are facilitated by Parkinson's NSW counsellors.
Registration for these meetings can be done to receive updates. Simply email supportgroups@our website.
In addition to these regular meetings, Parkinson's NSW also hosts seminars and online groups that might include talks by specialists on medication management, physical therapy, sexual health in Parkinson's, stress reduction, and practical tips to stay active and informed. Support groups also explore the impact of Parkinson's on relationships and intimacy with expert talks including clinical sexologists and neurologists.
Recent visits have been made to the "Taree", "Nowra", and "Chatswood" support groups, with future visits planned for "Murwillumbah", "Narrabri", "Macarthur", and "Orange".
These online support groups aim to provide holistic support covering medical, emotional, social, and practical issues faced by people living with Parkinson's and their carers.
