Global Food System Threatens Earth's Survival, Report Warns
A groundbreaking report reveals that the global food system is pushing five Earth systems to the brink, threatening human survival. The wealthiest 30% of people are responsible for over 70% of food-related environmental impacts. Meanwhile, healthier eating patterns could prevent 15 million premature deaths annually and restore these systems to safe levels.
The food system is endangering climate, land, water, nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and human-made pollution. The Planetary Health Diet (PHD), tailored to individual cultures and preferences, recommends prioritising fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Meat, fish, and dairy are optional, with an upper limit for consumption. This shift could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%. However, less than 1% of the world's population currently follows a diet that's good for both human health and the planet. The report highlights that people in middle- and low-income countries, particularly those with traditional plant-based diets, are more likely to meet the PHD criteria.
The report calls for urgent action to transform the global food system for human health, justice, and the environment. This involves encouraging healthier eating patterns and promoting diets rich in plant-based foods. By doing so, we can prevent millions of deaths, reduce environmental impacts, and ensure a sustainable future for all.
