Greek Hospitals Face Medical Error Crisis in 2025
Greek hospitals have faced a series of medical errors this year, with the most recent incident involving a blood transfusion at an unidentified hospital in June 2025, resulting in the death of a 62-year-old woman. This is the third such mistake reported in 2025.
In September, a 67-year-old patient at a private hospital received a blood transfusion with the wrong blood type, leading to a forensic examination. Earlier, two nurses at Attikon University General Hospital administered the wrong drug to a 22-year-old patient, causing a severe allergic reaction. The nurses were arrested for negligent bodily harm but later released pending investigation.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved safety protocols and stricter enforcement of medical standards in Greek hospitals.
The Greek health ministry has been notified of these incidents and is expected to investigate further. Hospitals are urged to review their procedures to prevent such errors in the future.
