Guardians of the Sea Beyond Shores
At Sciences Po Paris, Camille Maze-Lambrechts serves as the head of the Chair Overseas and Global Changes (Omega). As a CNRS research director in political science, Maze-Lambrechts is dedicated to a systemic approach that transcends the sole framework of the ocean.
The Omega chair recognises the ocean not just as a strategic resource for overseas territories, but as a living space, a cultural and historical entity. The chair's focus extends to the regeneration of environments, traditional uses, and their evolution, political dynamics, and institutional evolution in the face of global changes.
Moreover, the Omega chair is committed to the governance of island territories and the valorisation of the concept of socio-ecosystem. It collaborates with the Institut Louis Malardé (ILM) to participate in public health issues, such as ciguatera, a toxin accumulated in fish that can make their consumption dangerous, even deadly.
The ILM, a public institution under the tutelage of the Minister of Health of the government of French Polynesia, focuses on health, environment, hygiene, and food.
In overseas territories, the health of lagoons and mangroves plays a crucial role in protecting populations from storms or erosion. France, with the world's second-largest exclusive economic zone, has its overseas territories as the main contributors.
The Omega chair operates at the interface between science, local communities, and political decision-making. Notably, Dr. Julien Thébault, the CNRS research leader working on the development of the experimental platform for reef conservation and restoration in Martinique, is a key figure in this endeavour.
Through their collective efforts, the Omega chair and its collaborators aim to foster a sustainable and holistic approach to ocean governance, ensuring the preservation of these vital ecosystems for future generations.
