Guidance and aid provided for family members
Last Thursday, the Youth Welfare Office in Landshut played host to the first networking meeting for counseling centers that offer support to families and young people with (impending) disabilities. The gathering was organised by caseworkers from the city of Landshut and the Youth Welfare Office, with the aim of focusing more on the needs of these families and bridging the gap between youth welfare and integration assistance.
The meeting was planned as a kick-off for regular networking, and it brought together key figures from various organisations. Among them were Johannes, the Managing Director of Lebenshilfe Landshut, the city's Disability Commissioner Carolin Völkner, specialists from the Supplementary Independent Participation Counseling of the EUTB and OBA BRK – organisations within the Bavarian Red Cross's Open Disability Work, and representatives from Lebenshilfe Landshut.
The discussions during the meeting revolved around leveraging synergies in cooperation between the attending organisations. All participants agreed that close cooperation and collaboration are essential to improve offers, strengthen networking, and develop tailored assistance. Counseling centres can provide relief by guiding affected individuals through the complex support system and assisting with the application for services.
The meeting aimed to support families and young people with (impending) disabilities, as a 2022 study by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs revealed that parents of children with disabilities and affected young people themselves experience high psychological stress.
The head of Lebenshilfe Landshut, Johannes, was instrumental in establishing the network for counseling centres. The goal of the meeting was to bridge the gap between youth welfare and integration assistance, ensuring that families and young people with (impending) disabilities receive the support they need.
Following the success of the inaugural meeting, further meetings to strengthen networking and develop tailored assistance are already in the planning stages. These meetings will continue to bring together organisations that are dedicated to supporting families and young people with (impending) disabilities, working towards a more collaborative and effective approach to care and support.
