Health authorities under Trump's administration examine the potential obligation for healthcare providers to reveal potential dangers associated with transgender treatment.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are leading a coordinated crackdown on healthcare providers offering gender-affirming care for minors in the United States. The investigation, which has been ongoing since the Trump administration, focuses on potential misrepresentation or failure to disclose risks of transgender procedures and care [1].

The FTC seeks to evaluate whether consumers, particularly minors, have been harmed and whether medical professionals have violated sections of the FTC Act. The public comment period for this inquiry remains open until late September 2025 [1]. This initiative follows a series of workshops and investigations emphasizing alleged deceptive practices and violations of unfair competition laws by gender-affirming care providers [1][3].

The DOJ is also investigating potential fraudulent billing, Medicaid claims, and possible violations of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act tied to sex-reassignment treatments for minors, including surgeries [2]. Nearly 20 subpoenas have already been issued to gender clinics as part of these probes [2].

The Trump administration's stance has led several hospitals to roll back or ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth to comply with the DOJ and FTC investigations. Hospitals such as UChicago Medicine, Children's National Hospital, Connecticut Children's Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Yale Medical have been affected [4].

The Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., has stopped providing gender transition-related medical interventions, effective from August 30. However, mental health and other support services for LGBT patients remain available [5].

The Health and Human Services (HHS) has expressed skepticism towards transgender care, with the HHS release calling for medical ethics to be central in the debate about transgender care [6]. The HHS report revealed serious concerns about medical interventions for children and teens with gender dysphoria, highlighting risks such as irreversible infertility, sexual dysfunction, reduced bone density, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, surgical complications, and regret [6].

The change at the Children's National Hospital reflects the ongoing efforts from the Trump administration and its continuation under current federal agencies to limit the availability of gender-affirming care through policies restricting federal funding and enforcement actions [3][4].

The FTC's actions have been criticized for involving representatives from anti-trans groups, which have promoted discredited narratives against gender-affirming care during public hearings [4]. Despite this, major medical organizations continue to support gender-affirming care, highlighting the controversial and politicized nature of these federal actions [1].

The Trump administration has also pushed back on transgender care for minors and the participation of biological males in women's sports [7]. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how these federal actions will impact the availability and accessibility of gender-affirming care for minors in the U.S.
