In Giessen, an emotional reunion took place between a young man and the police officers who resuscitated him. Kurban, now recovered, expressed heartfelt thanks to the officers who revived him after he fell off his bike and went into cardiac arrest in February.
Kurban, who fled from Afghanistan and has been residing in Germany for two years, sustained a previously undetected heart condition in the accident. While he lacks recollection of the incident, he is grateful for the diligent efforts of the police officers and the medical team that saved his life.
The first responder to the scene was Main Commissioner Christian Fuchs, who recalled the situation as critical. Fuchs administered chest compressions while his colleague, trainee officer Sweetana Weber, tended to bystanders and ensured the scene was managed efficiently.
The officers transported Kurban to the hospital in Giessen, where he was placed in an artificial coma. Doctors successfully detected his heart defect and performed a stent implantation. Reawakening in the hospital, Kurban found himself appreciative of his second chance.
Kurban, now residing in a group home, took the initiative to express his gratitude to the police forces who saved him, as well as to the staff of the intensive care unit at the University Hospital. He presented them with a gift basket as a token of appreciation.
The incident was a rare occurrence for the officers, with Fuchs noting the experience as surreal and fortuitously ending on a positive note. For Fuchs, it was like being part of a movie. Despite serving as a police officer for 25 years, this was an unconventional emergency situation that has lingered in his mind. The young trainee officer, Sweetana Weber, expressed that this incident deeply impacted her, something she will never forget.
Such gratifying stories are relatively uncommon, according to the police spokesman Pierre Gath. Gath emphasized the significance of first aid in emergency situations, stressing its importance to officers' daily responsibilities. As part of their basic training, police officers receive comprehensive first aid and CPR/AED training, ensuring they are adequately equipped to handle emergency situations.
In the wake of Kurban's recovery, his fellow group home residents penned a handwritten letter to the police, expressing their gratitude for the officers' assistance: "You were there for our brother. Thank you!" The letter serves as a testament to the life-saving efforts made that winter day in Giessen.
In the community where Kurban resides, a new policy may be considered to include regular workshops on health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, and mental-health as part of vocational training programs for residents.
