Home invasion by a bear after homeowners let their dog outside, resulting in an attack

In a shocking incident late Tuesday night, a bear attacked two individuals inside a residential home in Nipigon, Ontario.

The attack appears to have happened immediately upon opening the door, as the bear entered the home when the residents opened their back door to let their dog out. The couple retreated to a bedroom and called emergency services, but not before the bear inflicted multiple lacerations and bite wounds on both victims.

The names of the victims have not been disclosed, but reports suggest that they are expected to be released from the hospital soon. The bear was dispatched to ensure public safety, and at this time, no further information regarding the bear is available.

This incident comes as reports of bear encounters and sightings are becoming more frequent this fall. In a recent case in Sault Ste. Marie, two women were attacked and injured by a bear while walking their dogs, but the bear was acting to protect her cubs.

In light of these incidents, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is encouraging residents to visit ontario.ca/bearwise for tips and information on staying 'Bear Wise'. For non-emergency bear encounters, residents are asked to call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327. In a unique turn of events, officers who arrived at the scene in Nipigon found the bear in the basement, being contained by the family dog. This shows the unpredictable nature of bear encounters and the importance of being prepared.

As we continue to coexist with wildlife in Ontario, it's crucial to remember to be cautious, especially during this fall season when bears are more active. Stay informed, stay safe, and stay 'Bear Wise'.
