Hong Kong Introduces Color-Code, Real-Name Registration for COVID-19 App

Hong Kong is introducing a new colour-coding system and real-name registration for its LeaveHomeSafe contact tracing app. The move, led by the Department of Health, aims to enhance COVID-19 management as cases surge. Users will receive red codes for infection and yellow codes for close contacts.

The new health chief, Lo Chung-mau, believes the shift to real-name registration will better inform the public about health risks. The app will adopt a health code system similar to mainland China's, with red-coded users restricted from leaving their homes or entering certain venues.

Hong Kong reported a staggering 2,992 Covid symptoms on Sunday, July 10, with over 2,700 locally transmitted. The high numbers have prompted the government to act. Arriving travellers and close contacts of COVID-positive patients will receive yellow codes.

The real-name system, while controversial in the past, is now being implemented to identify confirmed cases and those required to quarantine. Lo forecasts increased PCR testing, particularly for high-risk individuals. The government hopes these measures will help control the virus's spread, despite public pushback when the mainland-style code system was first proposed in 2020.
