Going Local: Alcohol Addiction Support and Prevention in Lower Austria

Take a peek at the nitty-gritty of alcohol addiction support and prevention efforts in Lower Austria, a region where a staggering 22% of Austria's 370,000 alcohol-dependent individuals reside. This week, Lower Austria joins the nationwide "Alcohol Dialogue" to spotlight the significance of prevention and the abundance of accessible treatment options.

Ludwig Schleritzko, member of the Styrian Regional Council, shed light on the initiative at a press conference at the NOÖ Klinikum Mauer. The dialogue week aims to stimulate self-reflection about personal consumption and foster a sense of empathy towards those battling alcohol addiction within our society.

Alcohol should not be casually swigged as a societal given or a solution to life's hurdles, according to Schleritzko. Instead, it's crucial to shed the preconceived notion that booze is a given right, and to recognize its potential downsides.

A Fresh Approach: Day Clinic and Alcohol Stations

In Mauer's Landesklinikum, an avant-garde day clinic packed with 12 beds and a specialized alcohol station boasting 32 beds operates. There are also day clinics with 164 spots in seven establishments combined with psychiatric departments across the state. These clinics offer a caring environment to tackle alcohol addiction head-on.

Martina Korbel, Mauer's addiction department chief and clinic director, stated that the clinic has seen a significant influx of clients seeking help, with the alcohol station reaching capacity limits since the pandemic began. She advocates for education, responsible drinking, and early intervention to keep individuals from sliding into the pit of dependence.

In 2024, the clinic saw 538 admissions due to alcohol-related issues, with 200 patients able to receive detoxification and treatment. Alcohol addiction is a pernicious, recurring condition that can significantly reduce life expectancy and deteriorate the quality of life, as Korbel explains.

Mauer's clinic employs a comprehensive therapeutic and medical-psychiatric program for treatment and detoxification.

Keys to Triumph: Training, Education, and by Buddies!

Korbel has also crafted a medical training therapy to combat depression and other mental health issues. The objective is to achieve 150 minutes of physical training weekly.

To promote responsible alcohol consumption, Korbel presents her "2er-Regel": abstain from alcohol for 2 days each week, 2 weeks every six months, 2 months each year, and consume no more than 2 drinks daily. Korbel also highlights the dangers of loneliness in triggering alcohol dependence and advises always having at least two friends nearby when imbibing.
