Having a Haunting Resurgence: Measles, Rubella, and Whooping Cough Cases on the Rise in Russia

A terrifying trend has arisen in Russia as measles, rubella, and whooping cough cases continue to skyrocket, leaving health specialists within Rospotrebnadzor deeply worried.

Medical professionals, during interviews with "Kommersant", attribute the alarming situation to a diminishing herd immunity.

The document, "On the State of Sanitary and Epidemiological Well-being of the Population in 2024", offers an extensive analysis of the status of infectious and parasitic diseases across the nation. It reveals that the incidence of 48 categories of infectious and 15 types of parasitic diseases has decreased when compared to the average long-term indicators (from 2012 to 2023, avoiding the disrupted years 2020-2021 due to the coronavirus).

Astonishing reductions can be observed in diseases like Astrakhan spotted fever, acute hepatitis B, bacterial dysentery, gonococcal infection, and others, signifying a remarkable success in the fight against certain infections.

Yet, the situation concerning measles remains disheartening. The year 2024 registered an astonishing 22,455 cases of measles, a 1.5-fold increase in comparison to the same period the previous year.

The predicament is most severe in cities like Moscow, Dagestan, and the Moscow region, where the highest number of cases have been reported. Heartbreakingly, the majority of those infected are children, and the situation worsens drastically among infants, with the incidence becoming 2.2 times higher.

The escalating numbers of measles cases are a significant concern as these diseases—though on a decline for other infectious and parasitic diseases—are primarily attributed to a decrease in child vaccination rates and insufficient herd immunity. Official reports showcasing data from 2024 reveal an 11-fold increase in measles, a six-fold increase in rubella, and a 4.5-fold increase in whooping cough in comparison to previous years. Health authorities and experts underline that these diseases can be effectively controlled with routine immunizations, and the resurgence is directly linked to a drop in vaccination coverage.

Several factors are contributing to this decline in vaccination rates: missed vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine hesitancy and misinformation, narrower coverage for these highly contagious diseases, and a focus on other diseases instead.

Experts insist on mandatory revaccination, particularly focusing on measles, rubella, and whooping cough, to curb further outbreaks and protect the public's health, a move many countries are also adopting to counter similar surges in vaccine-preventable diseases.

  • The rising cases of measles, rubella, and whooping cough in Russia, despite a decrease in other infectious and parasitic diseases, can be partly attributed to a decline in child vaccination rates and insufficient herd immunity.
  • In the pursuit of, not just physical health and wellness, but also mental health, understanding the importance of vaccinations, particularly for diseases like measles, rubella, and whooping cough, is crucial.
  • Despite significant success in fighting diseases like Astrakhan spotted fever and acute hepatitis B, the resurgence in chronic conditions like measles highlights the need for consistent public health education on the importance of vaccination.
  • As many countries grapple with a surge in vaccine-preventable diseases, a renewed focus on fitness and exercise, proper nutrition, and mental health may serve not only as our personal path to wellness but also as a complementary strategy to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
