Japan's oldest living person, Tomiko Itooka, has celebrated her 116th birthday. Born in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan on 23 May 1908, Itooka is now the second oldest person in the world.
Itooka took over the title of Japan's oldest living person on 12 December 2023 following the death of Fusa Tatsumi. She became the second oldest person in the world after the passing of Edie Ceccarelli. Despite her advanced age, Itooka has shown remarkable vitality. She has climbed mountains such as Mt. Nijo and Mt. Ontake in her later years. Itooka is known for her daily routine of drinking Calpis every morning and expressing gratitude to staff by saying 'thank you'. She is currently the 30th longest-lived person in human history and the eighth Japanese person to reach the age of 116.
