Kate Middleton Discloses if There is Ongoing Cancer Diagnosis

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, announced in a heartfelt video on March 22, 2024, that she had been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing a planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January[1]. The royal did not reveal the specific type or stage of cancer she had, but she did express her gratitude for the excellent care she received from her medical team[6].

In the video posted by Kensington Palace, Kate discussed the challenges she and her family experienced during this difficult time, stating that it had taken them time to explain the diagnosis to their children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, in a way that was appropriate for their ages[1]. She acknowledged her husband, Prince William, as a source of comfort and support, stating that they had been doing everything they could to process and manage this privately for the sake of their family[1].

"As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK," Kate said in the video[1].

In June 2024, it was announced that Kate had completed her chemotherapy treatment, stating in a video shared on their social media accounts that she was grateful for the support from the public and looked forward to continuing her recovery, as well as returning to work[4]. Despite facing a long road to full recovery, the princess remained hopeful, stating, "Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life"[4].

The hospital where Kate was treated amid her abdominal procedure is currently under investigation for a possible delay in reporting a security breach related to her medical files[5]. According to The Telegraph, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) requires organizations to alert them of data security breaches within 72 hours of discovery, but The London Clinic did not contact the privacy and data watchdog until more than a week after Middleton was discharged[5]. The ICO has confirmed that the "timeliness of reporting" is included in the investigation, and an expert suggests that Kate may have grounds to sue the hospital for any potential breach of her data protection and privacy rights[5].
