Manitobans Boost Flu Vaccination Rates as Season Approaches

Manitobans are showing increased awareness of the importance of flu vaccinations, with rates rising from 20% before the pandemic to 23% in 2024. This shift is largely due to the heightened public awareness of vaccination benefits gained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upcoming flu season, signalled by the end of summer-like conditions and the sudden temperature drop, has prompted Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba's chief public health officer, to advise residents to get vaccinated as early as possible. Flu shots are especially encouraged for younger children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions to prevent widespread transmission and hospital admissions.

Health experts, including Dr. Bunmi Fatoye with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, stress the importance of vaccinations for household members and extended family to protect vulnerable individuals. They also urge Manitobans to keep up with both influenza and COVID-19 vaccines to maintain overall public health.

With flu season approaching, Manitobans are encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their communities. The increase in vaccination rates reflects a growing understanding of the importance of preventive health measures, a trend that health experts hope will continue.
