Massive Water Bottles Recall by a Prominent Store Following Vision Loss Complaints of Over 850,000 Users
In a recent development, Walmart has announced a recall of approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail 64-ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles. The recall comes in response to incidents of injury and permanent vision loss, as reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recalled water bottles, which have been sold exclusively at Walmart stores and online since 2017 for about $15, are silver with a black screwcap lid and bear the model number 83-662 on the packaging. The Ozark Trail logo is embedded on the side of the bottles.
The recall is due to a hazard posed by the lid. When stored with food, carbonated beverages, perishable beverages like juice or milk, and opened after such storage, the lid can eject forcefully, posing serious impact and laceration hazards including vision injury risks.
As of the announcement, Walmart has received three reports of consumers injured by the forcefully ejected lids, with two of the consumers suffering permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.
Consumers who purchased these bottles are urged to stop using them immediately and return them to any Walmart store for a full refund. Alternatively, they can contact Walmart online or by phone at 800-925-6278 for more information.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Walmart announced the recall on July 10-11, 2025. The Associated Press reached out to Walmart for further comments on the recall.
The recalled water bottles were manufactured in China. The recall covers water bottles sold at Walmart stores across the country. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a notice regarding this recall.
