Medical Professional Providing Services Pro Bono
The Luangwa Safari Association Medical Fund (LSAMF) is seeking an experienced doctor for a volunteer role in the South Luangwa Valley, Zambia, starting from January 2026. The role involves working at the Kakumbi Rural Health Centre (KRHC), located near the main entrance to South Luangwa National Park.
Doctors applying for this position must have a medical qualification with generalist experience and familiarity with tropical medicine. They will be required to apply for a temporary medical licence through the Medical Council of Zambia, supported by LSAMF, and register under the HPCZ's "Limited Registration" pathway, which requires supervision by the Mambwe District Health Director.
Key responsibilities of the role include providing medical care to the local community, medical support for lodge staff and tourists, weekly training at the district hospital, participation in community health clinics, and coordination with local insurance and medevac services.
The Kakumbi Rural Health Centre includes two 3-bed wards, a dedicated delivery suite and postnatal bed, and regular clinics for chronic disease, family planning, and under-5 care. Doctors are on call 24/7 for lodge-related queries but are not on call for KRHC outside normal working hours, except in serious emergencies.
Investigations are limited, including malaria RDTs, HIV testing, glucometer, and pregnancy tests. Medical equipment and supplies are limited, and doctors are responsible for managing LSAMF stock for member consultations. Doctors do not store or dispense medication at their homes, only in the vehicle and secure locations.
Patient files are securely stored, with locked hard copies and soft copies accessible only by the doctor. The volunteer role is expected to last for 3-6 months, with an urgent need starting from January 2026.
The clinic handles over 1,500 patients per month and is growing due to increasing local demand. Conditions seen at the clinic range from respiratory infections to malaria, HIV, trauma, STIs, and chronic disease. The role is funded by LSAMF and is a volunteer position with expenses covered.
The contact for the LSAMF is [email protected]. For a precise and detailed job description, contacting the organization directly or reviewing their official website or job postings would be advisable.
