Moving Amidst a Pandemic: Strategies for Maintaining Safety

In the midst of a national health and economic crisis, author Reina Sultan embarked on a new journey – a move. With safety and organisation at the forefront, Reina shared her experience and valuable tips for those navigating the process during these challenging times.

Reina chose to rent a U-Haul cargo van for her move, opting for self-service to minimise exposure and potential spread of COVID-19. She also set aside $500 for potential damage to the U-Haul during the move. To ensure a smooth transition, she started packing a week before moving day, recommending others to do the same.

Sorting and labelling boxes by use frequency and room made unpacking a breeze. Reina even conducted a mini KonMari tidying up strategy as she packed, deciding what brought her joy and was useful for her in her new home.

When it came to touring houses and meeting potential roommates, Reina did it all via video chat due to the pandemic. She emphasised the importance of asking for an interview to understand their living styles and safety measures during these times.

Reina also warned against scammers on Craigslist during the pandemic, advising never to send anyone money without a live video tour of the property or having a friend go tour on your behalf. Video tours can provide clarity about the dimensions of the room you will be renting.

Safety was a priority throughout the move. Reina wore masks and maintained physical distancing while dealing with movers, who were booked through the U-Haul website. She used sanitizing wipes on all surfaces in the U-Haul and drove through E-ZPass tolls, being billed later by U-Haul.

After the move, Reina recommends sedating cats during the move, if possible. She also suggests quarantining for 2 weeks after moving, depending on COVID-19 test results and roommate considerations.

Reina moved due to a lease ending, demonic landlords, or a toxic living scenario. Despite the challenges, she encourages everyone to explore their new neighbourhood while wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. Prioritise your current/immediate needs, such as a nice living room if you are working from home.

Lastly, Reina tipped the movers 100 percent, but acknowledges this may not be financially feasible for everyone. Nonetheless, she encourages everyone to consider a plan to drop off the U-Haul with the least possible interaction with others.

In the end, Reina's pandemic move was a testament to resilience, organisation, and adaptability in the face of adversity. Her tips offer a valuable guide for those navigating their own moves during these unprecedented times.
