Nation's medical professionals advocate for a national prohibition of church gatherings

In the face of increasing COVID-19 cases during the Christmas season, Ute Teichert, chairwoman of the Federal Association of Doctors in Public Health Service (BVOeGD), has urged for a nationwide ban on in-person church services on public holidays.

Teichert expressed concern about the ease with which the virus can spread, particularly at church services, and emphasised the need for effective communication of corona measures. She criticised that many citizens are still not taking the seriousness of the situation seriously, as they are still holding parties and crowding into shops.

The call for a ban is not limited to the federal government, but also includes the states and municipalities. Teichert believes that the message needs to reach people regardless of their religious community and the language they speak. The communication strategy, she suggests, needs to be tailored to various milieus to ensure that the message is understood and acted upon by all population groups in Germany.

The effectiveness of the lockdown depends on the adherence of all population groups in Germany to the rules. A strict lockdown can only effectively decrease infection numbers if all population groups in Germany adhere to the rules. Teichert called on the federal government, the states, and the municipalities to communicate the corona measures more effectively in some milieus to increase compliance.

The Federal Association of Physicians for Public Health Services is also urging the federal and state governments in Germany to ban church services on public holidays. This move comes as a response to the high infection numbers this Christmas season.

As the pandemic continues to evolve, it is crucial that all measures are taken to ensure the safety and health of the population. The call for a ban on church services on public holidays is a step towards achieving this goal.
