Study Shows One in Eight Germans Experienced Childhood Sexual Violence, With Women Particularly Affected
Nearly one in eight children encounters sexual abuse.
Sexual violence during childhood and adolescence affects a staggering one in eight people in Germany, according to a recent study by Infratest dimap. The study, published on Monday, revealed that women were disproportionately affected, with about one in five reporting such experiences.
The results were grim indeed. A whopping 20.6 percent of female respondents and 4.8 percent of male respondents had experienced abuse during their youth. Among young women aged 18 to 29, the figure rose to 27.4 percent - more than one in four.
Coordinator of the study, Harald Dressing, remarked that the findings "reveal a significant dark figure that remains stagnant, despite increased awareness and expanded prevention measures in Germany." The victims almost always identified men as their perpetrators, with only 4.5 percent reporting abuse by a woman.
Perpetrators were most often found within the family and closely related circles. Men, meanwhile, were more likely to be abused in sports and leisure facilities, churches, and children, youth, and family aid settings. The research team stressed the need for differentiated protection concepts to tackle these diverse risk factors.
Gender and Context-Specific Risks Call for Differentiated Protection Concepts
In light of these findings, a multifaceted approach is required to address the issue effectively. These protection concepts aim to safeguard children and adolescents by considering both gender- and context-specific risks.
