New 'Stratus' Coronavirus Variant Emerges in Belarus

A new variant of the coronavirus, dubbed 'Stratus', has emerged in Belarus. First detected in early 2023, this variant is highly contagious but causes mild illness, according to health officials.

While 'Stratus' is expected to circulate alongside other viruses, the current flu season in Belarus is quiet. People are mainly battling rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and enteroviruses. This shift comes as respiratory infection rates nearly match pre-pandemic levels, with up to 40% of the population contracting Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) each season.

Looking ahead, health experts anticipate a mix of influenza A (H1N1, H3N2) and influenza B (Victoria lineage) to circulate in the coming seasons.

The 'Stratus' variant's emergence in Belarus signals a shift in the viral landscape. As flu activity remains low, health officials monitor the situation, preparing for a mix of influenza strains in future seasons.
