Uisce Éireann Completes Major Pipeline Repair in Greater Dublin Area

Uisce Éireann, Ireland's national water utility, has successfully completed a critical pipeline repair that supplies one-third of the Greater Dublin Area's drinking water. The repair, which began on July 31, 2025, involved fixing five leaks and replacing 35 metres of damaged pipeline between Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant and the Saggart Reservoir.

The work, described as complex, required the temporary shutdown of the pipeline for 28 hours to allow for draining and repair. As the repairs progressed, Uisce Éireann had warned residents in Dublin and parts of Kildare and Wicklow about possible low water pressure, discoloured water, or supply interruptions. They also urged water conservation to help maintain supply during the works.

As of August 2, 2025, repairs were reported to be over half-way done, with ongoing excavation and pipe replacement overnight. The expected completion date was early August 3, 2025, which was met successfully. Uisce Éireann continues to monitor the pipeline to manage any arising issues such as cloudy water or internal airlocks after the repair.

The potential impact on the Greater Dublin Area water supply during the repair included temporary supply interruptions and advisories for reduced water usage to maintain supply. To conserve water, Uisce Éireann suggests avoiding washing a car, taking shorter showers, and ensuring dishwashers and washing machines are fully loaded.

Declan Healy, Uisce Éireann's CEO, announced that new pipe sections will be laid following the current repairs to prevent a catastrophic failure. The repair work is being carried out by specialist repair and excavation crews.

For ongoing updates and advice, Uisce Éireann provides customer care contacts and an interactive map on their website for areas potentially affected by outages. The successful completion of this critical repair work ensures a reliable water supply for the Greater Dublin Area.

Scientists from Uisce Éireann's environmental-science division closely monitored the repair procedure to minimize environmental impact. The health-and-wellness department of Uisce Éireann also issued guidelines for water conservation during the repair works, emphasizing the importance of reducing water usage to maintain a consistent supply.
