Project in Hannover's FW: Enhancing Resuscitation Efficiency Through Innovation

The city of Hannover is set to revolutionize its emergency response system with the introduction of High Performance-CPR (HP-CPR). This innovative resuscitation concept, which has been meticulously prepared through intensive training, simulation exercises, and the use of modern resuscitation technology, is expected to significantly improve chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery.

Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire, emphasizes the importance of quick action in emergency situations. He states that HP-CPR is a concept that is scientifically sound and has been proven to save lives in practice.

Under HP-CPR, the emergency services can focus on complex medical measures under the guidance of deployed emergency doctors, while firefighters take over chest compressions, provide necessary equipment and gear, and support the transport of patients. This allows for almost continuous performance of life-saving chest compressions and smooth integration of important measures such as airway management and medication administration.

All employees of the Hannover professional fire brigade have emergency medical training, providing significantly more helping hands in the early phase of the operation. Since the beginning of October 2025, an emergency doctor's vehicle, an ambulance, and a fire engine staffed with four firefighters from the professional fire brigade have been dispatched for corresponding incidents.

Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the state capital's emergency services, explains the expectations of the testing of HP-CPR. He notes that the testing is aimed at ensuring that everyone in the expanded team knows exactly what steps to take in what order, leading to almost continuous performance of life-saving chest compressions and smooth integration of important measures.

The Hannover Fire Department, emergency doctor locations, and commissioned aid organizations have been testing HP-CPR since September 1, 2025. However, specific information about which aid organizations are participating in the tests is not currently available.

The Hannover Fire Department and aid organizations active in the state capital's area are committed to implementing the latest standards in emergency medicine and continuously improving patient care. The initial evaluation of the HP-CPR project is planned for six months. If successful, HP-CPR could mark a significant step forward in emergency response capabilities in Hannover.
