Psoriasis, PsA Linked to Neurological Conditions: New Research

New research reveals alarming links between psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and neurological conditions. A 2019 literature review found that psoriasis increases the risk of epilepsy by 1.9 times. Meanwhile, PsA raises the risk of stroke by 22% and schizophrenia. About 1 in 4 psoriasis patients develop PsA, which also increases the risk of neuropathic pain and peripheral neuropathy.

The connection between psoriasis and neurological issues is becoming clearer. Chronic inflammation in psoriasis can lead to neuropathic pain, often described as shooting, burning, or stabbing. This is more common in people with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), an immune-mediated condition affecting joints. A 2019 review also found a significantly increased risk of schizophrenia in those with psoriasis.

PsA's link to neurological diseases is complex. While it can lead to peripheral neuropathy, it may also affect the spine, as seen in related conditions like axial spondyloarthritis. This can have neurological implications due to inflammation near the spinal cord. Moreover, people with psoriasis and PsA have an increased risk of developing stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

The strong association between psoriasis, PsA, and neurological conditions underscores the need for closer monitoring and care. Further research is crucial to understand these links better and develop targeted treatments. Meanwhile, individuals with psoriasis and PsA should be aware of these potential risks and work closely with healthcare providers to manage their overall health.
