PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has launched a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident at the Grasberg Block Cave mine in Indonesia, where a massive mud flood on September 8, 2025, resulted in the deaths of seven workers and temporarily halted mining operations. The company has committed to a thorough root cause analysis, expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with findings potentially impacting global mining safety practices.
On the fateful night, around 800,000 tons of mud inundated the underground sections, blocking access routes and trapping workers. Two miners were confirmed dead, and five were initially reported missing. PTFI swiftly suspended operations across the entire Grasberg minerals district to prioritize search and recovery efforts. On September 20, 2025, a breakthrough was made when the bodies of two deceased miners were located and retrieved. PTFI has since arranged for the remains to be returned to their families' hometowns, providing logistical and financial support during this difficult time.
