Recalling Tunes Linked to Positive Moments
Study Reveals How Music Evokes Memories
A new study, published in the journal "PLOS One", has shed light on how music can trigger vivid memories. Led by Safiyyah Nawaz and Diana Omigie from Goldsmiths University in London, the study involved an online survey with 233 participants aged 18 to 76.
The study aimed to explore how music can evoke vivid memories. Participants were asked to share and categorise the memories evoked by a selection of songs and could also submit their own songs that triggered their memory.
The findings of the study suggest that energetic songs are more likely to evoke memories filled with joy and excitement. Rap songs like "Trap Queen" by Fetty Wap and "When Doves Cry" by Prince are more associated with memories filled with excitement and enjoyment. On the other hand, slow songs like "re: stacks" by Bon Iver and "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy are more likely to evoke memories characterized by feelings of calm, romance, sadness, and reverence.
Interestingly, the fast riffs of "When Doves Cry" may evoke memories, although this specific finding is specific to the song and not a general finding of the study. The artists of the songs associated with fast tempo that evoke memories of experiences with great joy and excitement in the study include Queen and Daft Punk.
The survey exposed participants to ten music pieces that were popular in their childhood and adolescence, one song per year. The study's results could potentially contribute to therapies for people with memory disorders like Alzheimer's. However, the study did not provide any specific details on how the findings could be applied to Alzheimer's therapy.
According to Nawaz, the properties of music, such as acoustics, volume, and energy, are linked to the emotional and phenomenological qualities of the same musical memories. The study did not explore any other factors influencing the evocation of memories aside from the properties of the music.
In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the power of music in evoking memories. It underscores the need for further research into harnessing this power for therapeutic purposes, particularly for people with memory disorders.
