Senate Allocates 45 Million Euros for Construction of a Mill Dam Bridge and Gene Therapy Research
The city of Berlin is buzzing with significant developments, as announced at a recent Senate meeting held at the Red City Hall. Economics Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) unveiled the funding for two major projects, one of which is the renovation of the Mühlendamm Bridge, and the other, a Translation Centre for Gene and Cell Therapies.
The Mühlendamm Bridge, situated in the heart of Berlin-Mitte, is currently operational only on its western half. The second phase of its renovation, which will run from 2024 to 2029, is being funded with the allocated 20 million euros. This project is so substantial that it is expected to "keep the Berlin Senate busy for a while," according to Senator Giffey.
The Mühlendamm Bridge is a heavily trafficked bridge, with approximately 74,000 vehicles crossing daily. Its renovation is crucial for maintaining the smooth flow of traffic in the city.
Meanwhile, the Translation Centre for Gene and Cell Therapies, planned to be established at the North Harbor, is receiving a funding of 25 million euros. The centre is expected to house the Berlin Charité and the Bayer Corporation, and the excavators are due to arrive this fall. This centre forms part of a broader initiative, the Planned Research Centre for Gene and Cell Therapies.
These two projects are being funded within the "Joint Task for Improving Regional Economic Structure" (GRW), a joint effort of the federal government and the states. The total funding for the GRW projects in Berlin amounts to 1.35 billion euros, with each project receiving 50% of its funding from the federal government and the state of Berlin.
Currently, there are 140 ongoing GRW projects in Berlin. The Berlin Senate is allocating 45 million euros for these two specific projects. The GRW program is the most important economic promotion instrument in Berlin.
The Mühlendamm Bridge renovation and the Translation Centre for Gene and Cell Therapies are set to make significant contributions to the city's infrastructure and scientific advancements, respectively. These developments underscore Berlin's commitment to progress and its status as a thriving hub of innovation and urban development.
