September Initiative Launches for RSV Virus Prevention in Elderly Individuals Age 75 and Older
In an effort to safeguard the most vulnerable during the upcoming respiratory illness season, the Ontario government has expanded its Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prevention program.
Starting in the fall of 2023, families in Ontario will have access to the RSV vaccination program for individuals aged 75 and older. This expansion includes the administration of the Beyfortus® immunization to eligible newborns, infants, and high-risk nami, as well as adults aged 60 to 74 who reside in long-term care homes or retirement homes.
High-risk nami up to 24 months of age in their second RSV season, and infants up to eight months of age in their first RSV season, are already part of the prevention program. Pregnant women also have the option to receive the RSV vaccine Abrysvo®, which provides protection to infants at birth.
It's worth noting that pharmacists do not have direct access to the publicly funded RSV vaccine supply. However, pharmacy professionals are now authorized to administer the RSV vaccine in Ontario. More details on where families will be able to access RSV immunization will be provided in the coming weeks.
The RSV prevention program aims to provide essential protection to those who are at a higher risk of severe illness from RSV. This includes older adults, young nami, and those with underlying health conditions.
By expanding the RSV prevention program, the Ontario government is taking a significant step towards ensuring the health and well-being of its most vulnerable residents during the upcoming respiratory illness season.
