Severious Car Collision Involving E-Scooter Mishap: Couple Suspected of Drunk Driving; Police Urge Public Cooperation

On Monday, July 14, 2025, a sobering reminder of the strict alcohol limit for e-scooter riders in Germany was highlighted when a 31-year-old man and his 23-year-old female passenger were involved in an accident on Krefelder Straße at 1:15 AM.

According to the police, the man was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while driving the e-scooter. A breathalyzer test showed a result just above one promille, which is above the legal limit of 0.5‰ (0.05%) for e-scooter riders, as well as for all motor vehicle drivers in Germany.

The incident resulted in minor injuries for the 31-year-old man, but the 23-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The man was taken to the police station for further investigation and blood samples.

The police also reminded that an e-scooter should only be used by one person, carrying multiple passengers is prohibited. Those in the probationary period or under 21 years old who drive under the influence of alcohol must pay a fine of 250 euros and receive one point in Flensburg. Repeat offenders or those who cause an accident due to alcohol may face more severe penalties, such as an advanced training course and an extended probationary period from two to four years.

It is important to note that even with lower promille values, a criminal offense is committed if alcohol-related impairment (swerving, alcohol-related accident) is observed. Those who drive a motor vehicle, including e-scooters, with a blood alcohol concentration of 1.1 promille or more can face criminal charges.

Injuries related to alcohol consumption on e-scooters tend to be more severe, increasing risks such as traumatic brain injury. This underlines the serious safety concerns tied to intoxicated riding.

Some e-scooter rental companies, like Lime, explicitly prohibit riding under the influence of alcohol and may suspend or ban users who violate this rule. Users are encouraged to assume all risks if they ignore the prohibition.

In Germany, the blood alcohol limit for e-scooter riders is 0.5‰ (0.05%), mirroring the regulations for motor vehicles. Violations can lead to fines, criminal charges, and potential loss of the driver's license. Riding under the influence also increases the chance of accidents and injury.
