Sleeping With Dogs: Comfort or Compromise?

Many pet owners enjoy sharing their beds with their furry friends, but is this habit beneficial or detrimental to our sleep? A 2018 study by Barker et al. found that adult women often feel more comfortable and secure sleeping with a dog than with another person or a cat.

Pets, particularly dogs, can provide companionship and reduce stress, fostering social and emotional connections. However, sleeping with a dog can have mixed effects on our sleep quality. While some people may not recall being disturbed by their dog's movements, others might experience increased restlessness. A well-behaved dog, however, may not negatively impact sleep quality.

On the other hand, there are health risks to consider. Dogs can carry allergens, bacteria, parasites, and fungi that can affect humans. Fleas, ticks, ringworm, and skin infections due to mites pose the most significant risks. Additionally, dogs can exacerbate severe allergies and asthma by bringing dust and pollen into the bed. Furthermore, sleeping with a dog may not be suitable for infants or children, as it can hinder their quality sleep. Dominant or aggressive dogs can also pose a bite risk, especially for children.

While many people find comfort and security in sleeping with their dogs, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons. Consider your pet's behaviour, your own sleep patterns, and the potential health risks. If you choose to share your bed with your dog, ensure they are well-behaved and free from parasites or infections. Always prioritise safety, especially when children or infants are involved.
